Waikato Regional Council has publicly notified its proposed regional coastal plan. Submissions close on 14 November 2023 and we need your help to ensure our submission is evidence-based. The plan sets the regulatory framework for the region’s coastal marine environment; determining what can and cannot occur there.
Important marine biodiversity is at stake
The Waikato coastal marine area is extensive. It encompasses the entire eastern side of the Hauraki Gulf including waters around the Coromandel Peninsula and much of the Firth of Thames. On the west coast, it extends from just north of Port Waikato down to Mokau. These marine areas contain very high biodiversity, natural character, and cultural and heritage values.
We need your help to make an impact!
EDS would like to lodge a substantive submission in order to strengthen spatial protections for important marine biodiversity within the Waikato Region. This would include addressing gaps in the identification of areas of significant indigenous biodiversity and ensuring robust management of potentially damaging activities (including fishing) within those areas. However, we need your help to engage a marine ecologist who can provide expert science advice to assist with EDS’s submission.
EDS is heavily reliant on donations to engage in plan making processes. We consider this one to be particularly important for the future health of the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana.

From a grateful EDS Team, thank you!
