Spotlight on Freshwater

EDS has had an extensive involvement in freshwater matters, having litigated since the early 1970s to both protect freshwater quality and support the promulgation of water conservation orders.

EDS initiated the Land and Water Forum in 2008 and CEO Gary Taylor was a member of the Forum until it went into recess in 2018. He was then appointed to the Freshwater Leaders Group and supports the majority recommendations contained in the Leaders Group report.

EDS continues to advocate for the protection of freshwater values, and the proper implementation of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. We litigate when required to protect freshwater values. Recent cases include successfully opposing the Ruataniwha dam in the Tukituki River catchment and seeking proper implementation of the Horizons One Plan.

Better linking science to policy

In 2021 and 2022 EDS investigated the role of science in freshwater policy by exploring development of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2020.
