EDS hosted a webinar on the Fast track Approvals Bill to assist with understanding the Bill and making submissions.

The Bill gives unprecedented powers to Ministers to approve projects that override almost all environmental protections, including projects like coal mines on conservation land and projects that are otherwise prohibited under the Resource Management Act. It goes much further than the controversial National Development Act 1979.

The natural environment is under stress and people should be extremely concerned about the threat the Bill poses to biodiversity, freshwater health and outstanding landscapes.

Everyone needs to let our law makers know the Bill cannot pass in its current form. This is important, because the Bill itself locks out community input on individual projects.

Led by Dr Greg Severinsen, EDS’s Reform Director, the webinar presented EDS’s perspectives on the Bill and review EDS’s draft submission. Questions and answers will follow.

Submissions on the Bill to the Environment Select Committee close on 19 April 2024.

Our draft submission is available via the link below and a template submisssion will be available on our website on Wednesday 27 March.
