The Government is seeking feedback on proposed changes to the Fisheries Act which target the process for making decisions on catch limits, onboard camera requirements, and landing and discard rules. EDS supports the need for more agile and responsive decision-making. However, the proposed reforms fail to address the fundamental issue – that underinvestment in fisheries research over many years has resulted in an information deficit. In that context, stronger checks and balances are needed.
