EDS runs two of the most preeminent environmental conferences in the country. We also hold smaller regional events throughout the year.

We have a well-established reputation for delivering highly topical and thought-provoking conferences that act as a catalyst, delivering valuable insights, momentum for change, and networking opportunities for attendees and sponsors.

We draw diverse participants together to galvanise progress towards solving Aotearoa New Zealand’s biggest environmental problems.

Webinar: What’s wrong with the Fisheries Amendment Bill

Monday 11 May 2026; midday - 12.45pm - Online via zoom webinar

EDS is making an extensive submission on the Fisheries Amendment Bill. The closing date for submissions is midnight on Wednesday 6 May 2026. The Select Committee will then hear from submitters.

The Bill makes significant changes to processes required for setting catch limits, seeks to exclude camera footage from the Official Information Act, and restricts judicial review rights, amongst other things. Overall, the Bill does little to address the actual problems with the fisheries management system. It reduces checks and balances on decision-making thereby increasing risk to our fish stocks and the natural environment that supports them.

Key author of EDS’s submission, EDS Policy Director Raewyn Peart, will highlight key problems with the Bill and how they should be fixed.

Beyond the election: A new mandate for the environment

Wednesday 24 - Thursday 25 June 2026 - Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

Beyond the election focuses on the next term of government. This timely conference will review key environmental challenges facing Aotearoa and the adequacy of political party responses. We will critique the workability of recent reforms and propose solutions to amend or replace bad law that risks harm to our natural world. The conference will also seek to identify common ground across the political divide – where shared purpose can drive enduring environmental outcomes.
