Webinar: What’s wrong with the Fisheries Amendment Bill
EDS is making an extensive submission on the Fisheries Amendment Bill. The closing date for submissions is midnight on Wednesday 6 May 2026. The Select Committee will then hear from submitters.
The Bill makes significant changes to processes required for setting catch limits, seeks to exclude camera footage from the Official Information Act, and restricts judicial review rights, amongst other things. Overall, the Bill does little to address the actual problems with the fisheries management system. It reduces checks and balances on decision-making thereby increasing risk to our fish stocks and the natural environment that supports them.
Key author of EDS’s submission, EDS Policy Director Raewyn Peart, will highlight key problems with the Bill and how they should be fixed.
