Spotlight on Freshwater
The state of the country’s rivers and lakes has rapidly deteriorated over the past two decades, with 45% of rivers now unsuitable for swimming and 51 indigenous freshwater species threatened. EDS has been involved in freshwater matters for decades, having litigated since the early 1970s to protect freshwater quality and support the promulgation of water conservation orders.
EDS was an initiator of the Land and Water Forum in 2008 and has participated in several fora focused on developing freshwater policy since. We support the concept of Te Mana o Te Wai, which prioritises the health and wellbeing of water bodies above other uses, as set out in the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management 2020.
EDS has undertaken policy research into how the scientific basis underpinning freshwater policy might be strengthened and how our systems could be better configured to support an evidence-informed approach to environmental decision-making.
We continue to advocate for the protection of freshwater values, and the proper implementation of the National Policy Statement. EDS litigates when required to protect freshwater values. Recent cases include successfully opposing the Ruataniwha dam in the Tukituki River catchment and seeking proper implementation of the Horizons One Plan.
